Chapter Nineteen

Ashe

My phone buzzed in my pocket as I headed out of a patient’s room. I was done seeing patients and planned on catching up on some administrative tasks before heading home for the day.

Seeing the voice mail icon, I checked my messages and listened to Melanie’s sweet voice. She was filled with anxiety about her appointment. I hated to hear her so unsettled, but it showed her vulnerable side, that sometimes she needed someone to hold her hand and tell her everything would be okay. I wanted that to be me.

“Cindy, I’m done with patients for the day. I’m heading out,” I called down the hall. I hurried out of my office and a few floors down to Dr. Miller’s.

As I opened the door to the office, all eyes turned to me.

“Dr. Harrison. To what do we owe the pleasure?” the receptionist said as she opened the window barrier.

“Melanie Smith. Is she here yet?” I checked my phone again for any messages.

“She just came in and is being prepped.” She eyed me suspiciously.

“Let me back there, please?” I gave her a wink and a dazzling smile to solidify the odds that she’d let me in.

“Anything for you, Doctor. She’s in room five.”

I made my way around the corner and knocked on the door to room five.

“Come in.” I smiled hearing Melanie’s voice.

“Ashe!” She jumped off the bed, the blue gown billowing around her, and wrapped her arms around my neck. I glanced down to see her ass peeking out.

“Nice outfit. I do remember this being the first thing I ever saw you in.” She giggled, giving me a twirl.

“You came.” Melanie took my face in her hands. “For me.”

“Of course. I’m sorry I didn’t answer. I’ll be as involved as you want. Or I can sit in the waiting area. Whatever you need, I’m here.”

She shifted from foot to foot, glancing down at the floor.

“Stay with me?” It came out as a question, but I knew I didn’t need to answer. Lifting her effortlessly, I placed her on the exam table and stood beside her, gripping her hand in mine. Right then, there was no place I’d rather be.

The procedure was over in just a few minutes. I think it was the uncertainty of the whole thing that gave her anxiety, the expectation that the ball was in her court now.

“See? It wasn’t that bad.” I brushed a kiss to her temple.

“It wasn’t. I’m sorry for dragging you away from work.” Her hand fell from mine. I hadn’t known Melanie long, but it seemed anytime she needed something she felt bad for even asking. I wanted her to know that our relationship was not a burden to me in the least. Being there with her was something I wouldn’t trade for anything. What she was doing for her friends was selfless, and I admired her more than anybody I’d ever met.

I stopped in front of her car and took both her hands in mine.

“Look at me, Melanie.” Her eyes drifted up to mine, and the most stunning shade of blue stared back at me.
